Tile & Coping

Enhance the Edge of Your Pool with Tile and Coping

Things to Consider When Choosing Tile and Coping

Beautiful and Functional Accents to Your Pool in Houston

Nothing displays the beauty of an inground pool like the tile and coping. From poured concrete to natural stone, the coping on your pool provides protection to the shell of your pool. Tile works two-fold to give your pool an accent and provide an easier way to keep your pool clean. Together, tile and coping are the finishing touches required to ensure you will enjoy your pool for years to come.

When designing a pool, give consideration to the best materials to use in producing a visually pleasing, yet highly functional recreational area. The combinations of materials and textures available are limitless. One moment you might consider the tan hues of travertine limestone. The next moment, you fall in love with the smooth texture of slate. You might find a sapphire blue tile to accent your pool’s water only to catch a glimpse of a red tile that would set off your new patio furniture. The possibilities and choices are endless.

Since 1980, JR Pool Plastering & Texas Gunite has been the source for pool coping in Houston and surrounding areas. No matter what combination of tile and coping you are thinking of, we can help you achieve the look you desire.

Things to Consider When Choosing Tile and Coping

Coping and tile are an important part of pool installation. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Coping Types – The purpose of coping is to keep water from falling into the back of your pool shell. While the function of the coping is practical, the design is where the fun begins! Think about these ideas:
    • Drop Down Face – Do you like a seamless finish? The drop down face hides the rims and gives the perception of the water surface as being flush.
    • Square Edge – Do you like a contemporary feel? The square edge and its variations offer a clean, modern look.
    • Bullnose (also, half-bullnose, sloping bullnose, and rebated bullnose) – Do you like a more traditional, heritage look? The bullnose provides rounded edges that give a softer finish to your pool’s edge.
    • Tumbled edge – Maybe you prefer the rustic look? The intentionally uneven edges of the tumbled edge offer that rustic look you want.
  • Coping Materials – The materials used for pool coping are practically endless. You can pick from natural stones like flagstone, travertine, granite, or slate, or you can choose precast concrete.
  • Tiles are critical – The tiling around the top of your water level is more than just a pretty accent. Tile makes it much easier to clean a pool than a ring of exposed gunite or shotcrete. Additionally, keeping the water level about half-way up the tile prevents a permanent water stain around the pool.
